All of Council’s Regenesis carbon forests have been planted with species from the
local Critically Endangered Ecological Community of the Cumberland Plain Woodland, providing much needed extensions to the available habitat for locally
native insects, reptiles, birds and mammals.
While relatively small, Blacktown City Council Regenesis carbon forests comply with
Australian and international standards for reforestation-related carbon trading. The forests have been planted in sections of 20 Council reserves and were designed to complement existing areas of passive recreation and sporting grounds, enhancing the ‘natural experience’ for local residents and visitors. In many cases, the Regenesis forests were planted by volunteers, through partnerships with businesses and community, religious and school groups. Western Sydney’s Blacktown City Council area encompasses 246.9 square kilometres, and is home to a culturally diverse population of 300,000.
Council has committed to using proceeds from any sales of carbon offsets from these forests to help maintain the forests into the future.
